Grete Tartler, born 23 November 1948 in Bucharest. Ph D philosophy (mediaeval) 1995. Graduated  University of Bucharest (Languages) 1978 and  the Conservatoire of Music Bucharest (1972)

Published since 1970 12 volumes of poetry (the most recent   Materia signata - Cartea Romaneasca 2004). Translated in English by Fleur Adcock (Orient Express, O.U.P., 1990), in Swedish by Ion Milos (Med fyra vingar, AB Gondolin förlags, 1995) and Dan Shafran, own translations in German. Included in various anthologies (French, Italian, Spanish, Greek a.o.).

Essays and comments on philosophy  and political philosophy (Melopoetics, Eminescu 1984, Oriental Proof, Eminescu 1991, Europe of Nations, Europe of Reasons, Cartea Romaneasca 2001, Arabic Wisdom, Polirom 2002,  European Identity, Polirom 2006, The Lonely Philosopher, Humanitas 2006).

Translations into Romanian from German (Goethe, Patrick Süskind, contemporary German poetry, Austrian authors a.o.) and into German (Romanian contemporary poetry  in Neue Literatur, 1987-1991). Other translations from ancient Arabic, English (Seamus Heaney, contemporary poets), Danish (H.Chr. Andersen a.o.). Weekly comments  in Luceafarul, Romania Literara a.o.

Since 1992 working  as a diplomate in Vienna, Copenhagen, Reykjavik, Athens.
